Moving to the main public rooms of the vessel, the text becomes increasingly flowery, but helps paint a mental picture of the inside of the Lancastria.
“NUMEROUS COZY PUBLIC ROOMS
“The dining-saloons [right] are tastefully decorated and the groupings of portholes is reminiscent of the arcades in many famous old Italian palaces. Walls of ivory white, with rich grey panels, a ceiling of ivory-toned plaster, draperies of blue embroidered with old gold, produce a delightful colour effect with which the rich upholstery of the furniture harmonises. Small tables are provided in both saloons to seat parties of friends. Among the most popular resorts on the ship is the veranda café, with its air of an old garden. The walls are treated to represent stone with trellis-work decoration. Numerous growing plants are scattered about and here in comfortable chairs the passengers can sun themselves and watch the sea.”
“SPACIOUS PROMENADE DECKS
“Half the joy and more than half the benefit of an ocean voyage cine from the hours spent on deck and in recognition of this there are great areas of deck space - big, open spaces on the boat deck for games, long avenues for promenading and many pleasant sheltered spots for deck chairs.
“THE SMOKING ROOMS
“One smoking room has stone plaster and panelling in Italian walnut. The furniture is covered in leather and its solid comfortable design is typical of the atmosphere of the whole room.
“THE WRITING ROOM
“The writing room {right] adjoins the main entrance hall. The style of decoration is of the Louis XVI period. There are numerous small tables with comfortable chairs covered in rich tapestries and of course all the necessary material for writing. There is a plentiful supply of books both classical and modern in the library.
“THE LOUNGES
“The lounges are apartments of unusual height, one of them panelled throughout in warm-toned oak with richly-covered mouldings and ornaments. The furniture and the rich carpeting blend with the general style of decoration and the whole effect of the room is one of warmth and luxury.
“THE STATEROOMS
“Important as are all public rooms of a ship, peculiar importance attaches to the staterooms, for these can be regarded in particular as the passengers’ real ‘private home’ on board ship. Many of Lancastria’s staterooms, with their exquisite panelling, their spacious wardrobes, their marble washstands with running water, their comfortable settees, their thick carpets and dainty hangings, inspire a sense of comfort and privacy. They are well lighted and the adoption of the most modern system of ventilation insures a constant supply of fresh air. There are on the ship also numerous staterooms with private bathrooms and toilet attached.
“SWIMMING POOL ON DECK
“There will be a salt-water swimming pool [pictured right] on the ship’s deck, so take your bathing suit.
“SINGLE BERTH CABINS
“The Lancastria has many outside and inside cabins for which rates are offered for the exclusive occupancy by one person in a cabin ordinarily occupied by two or more persons. The majority of the passengers will be berthed two in a room, with a few three (or four) in a room, in especially large rooms, to meet the need of family parties.”
