NEW LANCASTRIA EXHIBITION – POINTE ST GILDAS By Yves Beaujuge, Vice President, Lancastria Association of Scotland
A local French historical society, “The Friends of the Semaphore” have been responsible for dedicated exhibition dedicated to the Lancastria tragedy. The centre piece of the exhibition is a newly commissioned model of the Lancastria. Other pieces include a plate and a porthole recovered during the 1948 operation to lower Lancastria’s profile in the sea and reduce the hazard she presented to shipping in the area at the time. There are also maps, deck plans and other artefacts from the ship from before the start of the war.
There was a great deal of work undertaken both by the society and the model maker and the exhibition is a fitting tribute to the memory of the Lancastria. The Semaphore site itself overlooks the Loire estuary and is the closest point of land to the wreck of the Lancastria, approximately 5 miles away.
In a separate room Christophe Francois’ emotional documentary is screened on a continuous loop. After visiting the exhibition you can have a pleasant walk along the Point and look out towards the Loire Estuary and over to the site where the Lancastria was lost.
