FRENCH SALUTE SACRIFICE OF VICTIMS BY NAMING STREET AFTER LANCASTRIA

Local government officials have named a street in La Baule in honour of the victims of the Lancastria. The sign which was unveiled at a ceremony in June was witnessed by a number of survivors and relatives there to mark the 65th anniversary of the sinking of the Lancastria.

There has been a great deal of interest in the Lancastria since news of the disaster was brought to a wider French audience via the documentary film by Christophe Francois whose film "Lancastria, the history of a secret disaster" was shown on French national TV last year. The film has since won the International Maritime film of the year and been shown in 85 countries worldwide, except the UK. British broadcasters have so far shown a reluctance to bring the story of Lancastria to a British audience.
